Our U.P. Getaway was built in the 1950’s by my grandma (Helen Balog) and my dad (Richard Balog). It was part of a resort that my grandma operated for many years named “Bay-Log’s Resort”. Eventually it became more work than she wanted in her later years. She sold her house and two of the cottages. She added on to one of the other cottages and moved into that one. She kept the last cottage to supplement her income and rented it until 1998.
After that, my parents (Richard and Margaret) took over the rental cottage and our family used my grandma’s house as our gathering place. They renamed the property “Balog’s on the Bay”. They continued to rent the cottage for the next two decades until they passed it on to the next generation.
My sister kept my grandma’s home and my husband and I took over the rental cottage. We renamed it “Our U.P. Getaway”. We continue to rent it out part time, but we also spend time there with our kids and grandkids. The fifth generation of our family is able to enjoy time at the cottage with family which is pretty special to us.
We still enjoy seeing many familiar faces that return each year to spend a week or two. And occasionally we meet a new couple or a family who is vacationing in our area for the first time. If you are reading this, please know that we would be happy to host your next U.P. Getaway.
